Learning Support

Colleges NI  welcomes and encourages applications from students of all backgrounds. We aim to create an inclusive environment which widens participation and learning opportunities for students with disabilities. We make every effort to provide the best possible provision for students with a disability and Learning Support  staff work closely with each student to ensure that their particular needs are addressed.

If you come to any of the six Regional Colleges, Learning Support Services will help to arrange the support you need both within your chosen course and within the wider College community. A Learning Support  Officer will be available to arrange a support package based on your assessed needs and designed according to the requirements of your particular course of study and the resources at our disposal.

The College provides support for the following areas of disability:

  • Visual impairment
  • Hearing impairment
  • Specific Learning Difficulties
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorder
  • Mental Health difficulties
  • Mobility, dexterity and/or chronic pain 

Each College offers extra support in literacy, language, numeracy and in a variety of skills to help you to learn and achieve your chosen qualification. There is also support available for a range of physical, sensory or medical needs.

 Areas that you might need help with:

  • Some practical help with your studies; many learners are not 100% confident with planning and doing assignments or aren't quite sure what is expected of them
  • You may have a physical mobility, hearing or sight impairment
  • You may have a condition such as Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Tourettes or Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
  • You may have a specific learning difficulty such as Dyslexia, Dyscalculia or Dyspraxia
  • You may have medical or health issues such as Asthma, Epilepsy, Cerebral Palsy, Diabetes, ME (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) or Mental Health Difficulties, Depression
  • You may need some help with your exams (extra time, reader, scribe, separate room, prompt)

Whatever the challenge or obstacle, College Learning Support Teams are here to work alongside you and provide you with practical help and support. The Colleges experienced and trained staff are committed to working inclusively, using a variety of methods to meet learners' personal needs across a range of difficulties and disabilities.
