FE Sector at the forefront of innovation leadership in Northern Ireland

On Tuesday 4th April senior leaders from across Northern Ireland’s Further Education (FE) sector and the Department for the Economy (DfE) came together with key stakeholders from Invest NI, Innovate UK, and InterTrade Ireland, to strengthen the sectors focus on innovation development and growth. This collaborative event was organised to support DfE’s Innovation Strategy that clearly sets out the key long term actions necessary to ensure that innovation plays its full part in realising the vision of Northern Ireland’s draft Industrial Strategy.

All Ireland Scholarship Scheme 2017 launched

The All Ireland Scholarship Scheme which is funded by JP McManus provides financial support to high achieving students from low income households. The scholarships were first awarded in the Republic of Ireland in 2008 and became available in Northern Ireland in 2009. This is the ninth year they are available in Northern Ireland. The scholarship offers students financial support of £5,500 per annum for the duration of their course. Twenty five scholarships will be awarded to students who attend a grant aided post primary school or a further education college in Northern Ireland. The deadline for receipt of applications is Friday 23 June 2017.

Year of Food & Drink Awards - 2 Colleges win awards

The Year of Food and Drink Awards were held in the Culloden Hotel Belfast on Thursday 2 February 2017. We are delighted that two FE Colleges were among the Award Winners.

3 students short-listed for the British Education Awards

The inaugural British Education Awards will be held at Grand Connaught Rooms in London, on 30 January 2017. Students from across the UK are set to gather at a unique awards ceremony that will celebrate exemplary academic and extracurricular achievement.

NWRC student wins the 2016 FSB Award

Celebrating Success with the Future Students of Business Junior Minister Alastair Ross MLA yesterday presented the ‘Future Student of Business Awards’ to students from across each of the six Further Education Colleges in Northern Ireland. North West Regional College student Daniel Gallagher, who has devised a smart app to turn off electronic appliances when their user falls asleep, walked away with the overall award and £1,350 in prize money. Conscious of both the potential energy savings, and the reduced risks of devices overheating if left on for longer periods, Daniel plans to use his award to work with app builders to develop his project and integrate it within sports watches and devices that already monitor their owners’ heart rates.

UK Skills Show - NI sweeps the board

NI had 56 students competing across 49 competitions in the UK Skills Show in Birmingham across a range of subject areas. The competition took place 17-19 November in the NEC, Birmingham.
